Day 10 Update

It turned out that we stayed pretty busy today, despite not having anything to do.  When our driver dropped us off at our apartment this morning, Norm started working for awhile and I was blogging and reading.  All of a sudden, he closed his computer and said, "Let's go to McDonald's and see if we can spy on Dasha."  I wasn't sure if that was a good idea because I didn't want to get caught by the nannies and get reported to our facilitator for stalking.  Norm wasn't worried about that so we went.  McDonald's is just around the corner from our apartment and we suspected it was the one they would be taking the kids to for lunch.  As we approached, we looked around the parking lot for the van we had seen earlier at the baby house.  We assumed that's what they drove, but we didn't see it so we started to go inside.  As we opened the door, we saw a nanny we recognized and a small group of kids with Happy Meals.  We did NOT want Dasha to see us and yell, "Mama y Papa!!!", so we walked fast to the other side of the restaurant and debated if we should stay there until they left or walk past them again and watch from outside.  We decided to try to get out without being seen and quickly walked past the group.  I had my sunglasses on and my hair in my face and Norm looked the opposite direction.  Once we were outside, we literally hid in some bushes to get the best view of them without being seen.  It was pretty funny and we got some strange looks from people.  They weren't inside much longer and we watched as they came out and loaded into a car (it might have been 2 cars, we couldn't tell, but it definitely wasn't the van) and drove away.  We were pretty proud of our smooth spy skills but I hope they're not waiting to yell at us tomorrow morning when we get to the baby house.

After that little adventure, we decided to walk to the mall since we had nothing to do and it's a LONG walk.  There's a restaurant in the mall called The Pasta Project and we heard it was good and wanted to try it.  The weather here continues to be beautiful and it was a perfect afternoon to be outside.  The Pasta Project was interesting.  Each table had a touch screen monitor that we used to order our food.  It was pretty cool.  You could get a picture of each menu item and a description in English.  My food was very good but Norm's lasagna was burnt.  If we had been at home he would have probably sent it back, but that just doesn't seem like something you would do here so he did his best to eat what he could.  After lunch we walked around the mall.  We stopped in the Levi's store and a pair of jeans was $150+!  We also looked around a toy store and decided that if we lived in Ukraine our boys would definitely not have as many Legos as they do. Wow!  They were expensive!!

Unfortunately we didn't make the Romeo and Juliet ballet tonight.  When we got home from lunch Norm learned he had a work call that he needed to be on at 6:00.  I was bummed, but it's okay.  I'm not sure I would have lasted the full 3 hour performance tonight.  After his call ended, we took another short walk and found a yummy bakery with delicious chocolate croissants.  Thanks for the suggestion, Kelly.  They were great!  :)

Well, it's now 8:00 pm and I'm ready for bed.  Doing nothing is exhausting!!!  Good night!

  1. It continues to sound like you both are doing great. What a blessing to be able to spend some time together and enjoy each other's company. So glad that everything is falling into place. Praise God!

We did some serious damage to the bakery. Twice a day we were there, the boys loved it and it always gave us something to do.

If you were standing in front of the McDonalds and you looked down the street, not toward the ballet but the other way, walk to the end of that street and take a left. Walk down about 1/2 mile and on the right side of the street there is a really good little pizza shop called NY Pizza. Another place that the kids loved. We stayed basically right near there.
